Brave

I received a fantastic gift in the mail the other day. It was a portrait of myself done by an artist I've never met before. He says he is not an artist but I beg to differ. To me John has earned the right to call himself an artist. Too often people compare themselves to some great artists whose work they could never achieve and therefore say that they are not an artist. Well there are a lot of artists that are way better than me. So should I not have the right to call myself an artist. I don't think so. I say if you have the courage to draw or paint or make little collages or whatever, then you can and SHOULD call yourself an artist. I feel this is one of the hurdles people must overcome in beginning to start drawing or painting again after many years of procrastination. We think that maybe someone will laugh at us or say their art stinks. I can tell you all honestly that I LOVE John's portrait of me. I am going to take it to the frame store and have it framed with a beautiful thick 8 ply matte and it will hang with honor in my apartment alongside artwork by some of the most famous artists in the world. I'm a collector as you all know (bragger). So you tell me should John call himself an artist. Now if only he will say it to himself, he just may do more lovely paintings just like this one.

Hard to say if Van Gogh would have become the renowned artist without the collection of letters to Theo.... We all love a good backstory. Thanks for sharing

It makes me feel good that you are giving such positive feedback to up and coming artists. Not having gone to art school, myself, I agree that without the education there is a sense of being "less than" an artist, but you just gave me and other self-taught doodlers the courage to stand up and say,"I'm an artist, damn it!" Thanks for the encouragement.

My first visit here, and yes he is an artist..and as for me I am not an artist...no just a Cartoonist. Does that count? lol

Cartoonists are certainly artists.

Great post and that is a very nice portrait to add to your collection. Everybody has creative drives, they just need to give themselves permission to follow their own artisitc paths and develop their skills on their own terms even if "Art School" was not part of that path.

Get job John did. One of the hardest things to do is to define yourself as an 'artist' or 'writer'. It has taken me almost 50 years to be able to stand up and say 'I am a writer' and believe it.

Of course, if I can't spell Great rather than Get, does that blow my "I'm a writer"?

Of course he is a artist. What defines Artist? I sometimes struggle with telling people I'm a artist, since I have no "formal" training. So thanks, you give me courage to say "I AM a ARTIST"
By the way I love the portrait.

Fantastic, I've also been following your blog for awhile but wouldn't have the balls to paint the picture or write the letter, John is the man.

Wow, every so often I come to your site to see what new things you have added. I peeked at the jobs you have had the past years and wow, what an amazing testimony of a person. I hope to only get lucky like that one day. What amazing adventure of opportunity you have had. As I was scrolling down your blog, I came upon John's story. I have to say what your wrote was so beautiful and your words were a huge inspiration to me. As a human being and through the years of art and artists, I always hesitate to create something at all because of what people will say and about my credibility. But after reading John's letter and seeing what feedback you gave him... I just cannot continue without leaving a message of Thanks. So Thank You for those encouraging words. I really appreciate it, you have no idea!
Keep on creating amazing things!

As someone who loved to draw at school but was ridiculed by a teacher and stopped - never believing I could draw again...I can understand why people like lose their confidence to call themselves an artist.
Go for it John... keep drawing - I think the portrait is great. and just as an aside ... wish I had you as a teacher Tommy!
