Size Matters

I used to draw in all different size drawing books. Then I started blogging and realized some formats just don't work well on blogs. Take for example the wide, double page spread, drawing books. If you do a drawing in one of these suckers and post it, the size will appear very tiny. I've posted a few examples above. There is too much width and no height. The details become so small you can hardly see anything. Now I only draw in books that are squarish or rectangular with the height being the longest measurement. It makes a big difference. Some people on Urban Sketchers post these tiny tiny drawings. They haven't learned that in the blogging world, size matters.

Tommy,
You read my mind. A couple of days ago I was wondering about the size of the drawings you post on your blog and now you post this entry. I guess what you are talking about is the right aspect ratio? But what I was wondering is about the actual size of the drawings themselves. Some of the drawing pads I've seen in some pictures you posted of yourself drawing seem quite large. How do you convert them to the web? Are they scanned? Do you take a picture?

I love your site, by the way.

I scan them all. I have a nice size scanner that perfectly fits the largest size book that I draw in. The others are all smaller. Such as a moleskine, which will fit in any scanner.
You hit it on the head. I am talking about aspect ratio. Bingo. You can see how my other posts work so much better than these tiny little drawing. you can't even read my writing on them.

Personally, I don't mind the wide formats as long as the image link shows you a big version so you may appreciate all the details. I can see how the scanning can be a bit of a bugger though.

I scan them separate and then put it together in photoshop.

Yes size matters, I used to use very large sketchbooks almost impossible to scan!

Nothing is impossible only difficult.
