Museums

I've never liked going to museums. Not even as a little kid. I'm not sure why that is. As a result I know almost nothing about art history. It's not that I don't want to know but something must have happened early in my life to so completely turn me off to museum going. I glaze over and feel very intimidated and stupid. Getting out of a museum as quick as possible is all I think about after entering one. You would think someone who spends every moment of their life painting and drawing would feel a little comfortable in museums. Many times on vacation, Yun will go to museums while I just stay on the street and draw. I'm not sure how to fix this. I guess I'm in search of a life altering event.

Hi Tommy, I wanted to thank you for being my first follower, It made my day. I'm looking forward to the Urban Sketchers site going up as well. I agree about museums by the way, but I'm working on it. Have you ever been to the Society of Illustrators?

What about churches? Here in Italy they often are the best museums. Do you feel the same way?

Yes I've been to the society of illustrators gallery. It was years ago. I have trouble with churches too. Went to catholic school for 12 years.

I am shocked to learn that. Shocked, I say! I, on the other hand, am one of those people who reads every single placard, note and description, often causing logjams for people running through an exhibit just so they can say they 'saw' it. This is why I usually go alone, too, and I prefer it that way. (You win: I only had eight years of Catholic school.)

I think the reason kids grow up hating zoos and museums is because whoever takes us there expects us to go so slowly as if every animal or piece of art means something to us. If you tell a kid, find your favorite painting in this room and tell me what you like about it, or if you take the zoo as a nice walk and ask them which animals do you want us to stop at, all of the sudden, they're invested.

I went to catholic school too and I can't stand churches, bells, hymns, all that. I don't like museums and galleries because I feel that when a work of art is put into one of these places it is effectively dead, like a butterfly on a pin. I think art should be handled and enjoyed, not revered in these sterile places. (I don't even like art to be framed!)
And of course, I love the drawing - those girls probably do only dream about burgers!

I think catholic school turned out a lot of great artists.

i love her attitude, but with those kind of looks she can afford to give it.... hey, just enter a museum of art like you would opening a book. Who cares what you know when you enter, it's what you learn when you leave that counts.

Your blogs always make me smile, especialy this one. After 30 years of not seeing each other I ask you to meet me at a museum. Ironic.

I just wanted to look at your cans, Eileen.

I've started to feel it on the last years, mainly with art museums, more with modern art museums. I feel this is as fashion or hit parades, a question of being in or out. Seems like a duty, you're a bumpkin if you don't do it (or hear, or wear, or like what you "must").

I must say I do wear the right clothes

Of course you can always visit via the Internet... for instance the Smithsonian American Art Museum has an interactive area which is really cool : ) Museums always overwhelm me, I get a headache after a short time, it is visually too much after a short time and I feel uncomfortable as I am not usually going to look at pictures I don't like (even if they were Masters) and I am not smart enough to see them as I am supposed to! So don't feel bad. Your work is awesome and being outside is way better anyways (in the nice weather that is).

The internet is an interesting thought.
